Art and Design
Through our art and design curriculum we teach specific skills so that our pupils can explore ideas, create and evaluate artwork. Our pupils create using materials to represent objects realistically and imaginatively and express ideas and feelings. They evaluate their own work and that of other artists and they are offered the opportunities to understand the value and significance of art in society by studying artists, architects and designers. We focus upon the key areas of colour and tone, pattern, line/ shape/ space, texture and form and we use a range of media (e.g. clay, watercolours, acrylics, charcoal, modroc, pastels) and techniques(e.g. drawing, painting, appliqué, embroidery, silk painting, batik, sculpture). We weave through a progression of skills within each area and then incorporate them creatively into topic work using interesting artefacts as stimuli, such as objects from other cultures. We are also steeped in opportunities to visit artists at venues such as the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Hepworth Gallery, The National Coal Mining Museum and the Sheffield Theatres and we also invite professionals into school. Our two Arts Award trainers nurture talent and leadership through the Arts Award.
